❄️ WINTER LENTIL SALAD ❄️

Fitness On Toast Faya Blog Girl Healthy Nutrition Lentil Vegetarian Pescatarian Tasty Health Diet Salad Winter Hearty Veggie Option Dinner Lunch

Being a strict pescetarian, I try to find different ways of working in varied, exciting protein-rich plant foods to my dishes, wherever possible. This salad ticks the protein box thanks to the lentils and that delectable ‘grilled halloumi’ topper. Combined with thyme and honey-roasted veggies, it tastes just a little reminiscent of something ‘Christmassy’, and absolutely delivers a hearty, filling experience that few salads can match.  I dare you to take up the challenge of whipping this up for dinner during the coming week; get the full recipe by clicking MORE! PRAWN & RASPBERRY SPRING SALAD!

Fitness On Toast Faya Blog Girl Healthy Workout Meal Post Training Dish Tasty Idea Food Cook Recipes Healthy Diet Lean Protein Prawn Fresh Berries Raspberries Berry World Make Food-4

Salad isn’t boring, it’s just chronically misunderstood; this recipe is a refresher on how to get the most out of your relationship with it! It’s a protein-packed dish which takes mere seconds to throw together and packs a host of flavours as well as some unusual textural surprises. It’s light, lean, nutritious and also works as a great post workout meal. For the piece de resistance, I’ve added some fresh, plump, juicy raspberries! The low GI sweetness of these little red cones compliments the crunchy textures and savoury flavours of the broader dish fabulously, and overall makes it taste fresher and lighter. What’s more, the colour renders the dish less drably green by introducing some visual variation to excite the eye as much as the taste buds! A beautiful, timely reminder that spring is on its way which is a big deal for us Swedes 🙂 I hope you love it too; on the off chance you prefer something more carby, I’ve provided an alternative ‘progression’ of the dish, invoking the timeless formula of the whole grain wrap… Click MORE for the full recipes and how-to… (more…)

“SHOULD I CUT FOODS?”

fitness-on-toast-faya-blog-girl-healthy-workout-food-diet-nutrition-nutritionist-dietitian-recommended-cutting-foods-information-informative-article-qualified-professional-4

The world of health and fitness is awash with myths to debunk, and one of the most frequent email questions I receive is about cutting foods; the sender has usually read somewhere that fat / carbs / protein are bad, and have therefore decided to leave them behind. This post is my first attempt at debunking some of those myths! I would never recommend cutting out any of the 3 macros, but to add weight to my view, I’m enlisting the help of a renowned specialist and friend, Leo Pemberton a BDA-registered practising Dietitian based in London’s Harley Street. He has worked within 3 large NHS trusts, several corporate healthcare providers, and has powered out 3 marathons (!). He operates at the top of his field, and is the right person to help lend some clarity to a dangerously confused topic, about which there’s a vast swathe of misinformation on the internet. Let’s set the record straight! (more…)

STEAMING FOR YOUR WORKOUT!

Fitness On Toast Faya Blog Girl Healthy BRITA recipe Food vegetables steamed pre workout gym fuel health nutrition ideas

I recently spent some wonderfully peaceful days at the beautiful Chateau de la Chèvre D’Or (full ‘active escape’ review forthcoming) in Eze, France, where I enjoyed some exquisite and healthy mediterranean cuisine, and have returned freshly inspired! Apart from seafood, the locally-grown organic vegetables are a recurrent feature in the region’s cuisine, often prepared via steaming. Whilst I may not be able to replicate the beauty of the piece we photographed above (I’m not Michelin-starred!), I believe it IS possible to simulate that same mix of flavours and textures at home! Click more to see this mediterranean-inspired vegetable recipe, focussing on the benefits of steaming, and which is a fantastic pre-workout dish to help fuel your session! (MORE) (more…)

MY HEALTHY EGG MUFFINS !!!

Fitness On Toast Faya Blog Girl healthy Eating Recipe Food Dinner Diet Tasty Clean Lean Eating Protein Egg Muffin Salmon Vegetable-4

I haven’t posted a recipe for a while, so here’s another super healthy, quick and easy one to add to your repertoire! These little Egg Muffins contain some great lean protein, healthy fats, plenty of fibre and a host of vitamins & minerals. One observation I’ve made during my pursuit of a healthy lifestyle is that often, we overlook the concept of ‘presentation’. Whilst you may be ‘food-prepping’ six tupperware containers every evening, I think occasionally its important to sit down and really enjoy a proper meal, because after all we eat with our eyes (as well as with our mouths!). But the presentation bit need not amount to hours of painstaking fussing; instead I’d argue this little recipe is a perfect example that mouth-watering presentation can be pretty quick, clocking in at under 15 minutes total! These muffins can be stored in the fridge for circa 2-3 days as well, so whip up a batch and see what you think! Get the recipe and how-to here…

HEALTHY HADDOCK RATATOUILLE !!!

Fitness On Toast Faya Blog Healthy Recipe Workout Exercise Nutrition Diet Beauty Healthy Fresh Instructions Ratatouille Haddock Poaching Poached Fish Protein-4

This utterly delicious dish was inspired by my admittedly childish love of animation. If you haven’t seen it, Ratatouille is a laugh-out-loud Pixar movie which I think works just as well for adults as for children. Regardless of that side-track, whether you’re a cartoon fan or not, this dish is, as ever, healthy, super easy to prepare and packed with overwhelmingly gorgeous flavour. I teamed it with some fresh Haddock from the local fish mongers which I poached in a filtered water-bath. The main activity involved in crafting a Ratotouille masterpiece is a whole lot of chopping (great cardio), so sharpen your knives and lets go! (more…)

TOFU, QUINOA AND CARROT STIR-FRY DISH !!!

Fitness On Toast Faya Blog Healthy Tofu Black Quinoa Rocket Carrot Broccoli Dish Nutritious

When you hear “high protein”, the mind naturally plays a stereotyped little game of word-association, & you come up with things like ‘barbecue’, ‘chicken breast’, ‘juicy steak’ etc. You certainly wouldn’t think ‘vegetables’. But certain plants, grains and seeds are vast oceans of protein; quinoa & tofu, are two such oceans, making them the a fabulous dietary ingredients to complement your training regime, and to accompany a healthy lifestyle. My quick and easy 320-calorie stir-‘fry’ pictured above shouldn’t take longer than 15-20 minutes to throw together, it’s significantly lighter than a traditional stir-fry, full of nutritional goodness and I think it tastes just as yummy! For extra protein-factor, I’ve added some egg as well. Click MORE to get the low-down on the ingredients, and the ‘how-to’. Hope you enjoy it! Faya x (more…)

SPORT RELIEF ON TOAST: OPTIMISING FOR THE SWIMATHON!!!

Fitness On Toast Faya Blog Sports Clothes Exercise and Fashion Post Kenwood House Sport Relief 2014 Charity Comic Relief Arm Rehab Resistance Band Exercises Strength Muscle-6

I’m still splashing away in the pool, learning to swim the front crawl for the fabulous cause that is Sainsbury’s Sport Relief, kicking off on March the 23rd 2014 at the epic Olympic pool. Anyone can take part and if swimming isn’t your cup of tea there’s also the cycle / marathon . You’ll be getting fit for 2014 (the classic resolution) whilst raising money for some of the poorest in the world. Why not sign up?! Check it out HERE!

You might notice that whilst I’m rattling on about swimming, I’m not in a pool in these pictures (shot outside the newly re-opened Kenwood House, just at the top of London’s Bishops Avenue, aka Billionaires Row). Yes, it’s hard to swim through air, but this post is actually about training the small stabiliser muscles that comprise the shoulder; it’s usually these smaller ones that are susceptible to strains in the pool, and are often neglected when you train in the gym. To build them up and prevent injury, there are a few simple exercises you can do with just a trusty resistance band…
