Whilst on a trip back home to Sweden, I spent some time at a truly unique spa hotel. ‘Yasuragi as it’s named in Japanese, is nestled on the outskirts of the beautiful Stockholm archipelago, and is deeply infused with Japanese heritage throughout. The hotel, a former school designed by a Japanese architect, is vast, light, natural and altogether in tune with the verdant forestry surrounding it. Wherever you look there are sweeping, majestic views are over the lush archipelago and a fascinating combination of ‘the modern’ – large concrete slab walls, floor to ceiling windows – and ‘the traditional’ – Japanese tatami mats on the floor and walls and the respectful national ethic. ACTIVE ESCAPE: SANTORINI !

There are those iconic postcard images we’ve all glanced at one time or another, formed of opalescent skies, gentle haze and crystal seas, which are conjured in the mind at the mentioning of ‘paradise’. For me, that place had always been embodied by the Grecian sun-kissed island of Santorini. Crisp white villas topped with royal-blue domes, perched romantically on cliffs, and peering dizzyingly over the azure Aegean Sea hundreds of meters below. The hotel I’ve long lusted after has ever been the hyper-picturesque Katikies in the town of Oia (northern-most Santorini), a snaking labyrinth of immaculate whitewashing, breezy luxury, and care-free bliss. My experience there has revealed a slice of secluded, heavenly perfection, intimately nestled amidst secret white coves, overflowing with charming personality, and totally dedicated to the faultless service of guests. I recently wrote a post on the multiple benefits of Sports Massage; it’s a topic about which I still receive regular emails, so I thought I’d extend the series into this post looking at reflexology – how it works, along with its many advantages. That’s because in training, we rely on our feet far more than we perhaps realise; for stability in stance, springing up / off, gaining traction, sprinting, climbing, propulsive kicking in the pool… yet for all their relentless use, they’re generally neglected and often in need of some serious TLC. Reflexology is a holistic, ancient Chinese practice, which like a sports massage isn’t a cosmetic skin-level treatment but instead aims to bring relief to a wide range of conditions (including stress, muscle tension, hormonal imbalances, back pain, poor circulation, toxin cleansing, digestive problems, menopause, sleep difficulties, and migraines). My personal experience has been of extreme relaxation and refreshment, which really helped to invigorate my workouts. You might remember I recently listed some of my favourite tips to get glowing skin HERE. I know myself that when I’ve been out partying for a few days, (a little alcohol, some late nights, limited sleep, perhaps too many sugary foods etc), I’ll be feeling and looking tired with circles under my eyes and the occasional break out! As part of my ‘Active Escapes’ series, I recently stayed at a destination so heavenly that it completely inspired and enthused me to author this full review. The historic and beautiful Chateau de la Chèvre D’Or, nestled amidst the medieval village of Eze, on France’s exquisite Cote D’Azur, enjoys what must be the most magical, celestial view of the French Riviera, and hosts an armory of active ventures for the healthiest of holiday-goers to enjoy. The hotel itself, Relais & Chateaux affiliated, is relaxed, quirky, charming, classic and respectfully staffed by masterful hoteliers. It was perfect for my 3-day European escape, from which I returned energised, focused and relaxed. I recently spent some wonderfully peaceful days at the beautiful Chateau de la Chèvre D’Or (full ‘active escape’ review forthcoming) in Eze, France, where I enjoyed some exquisite and healthy mediterranean cuisine, and have returned freshly inspired! Apart from seafood, the locally-grown organic vegetables are a recurrent feature in the region’s cuisine, often prepared via steaming. Whilst I may not be able to replicate the beauty of the piece we photographed above (I’m not Michelin-starred!), I believe it IS possible to simulate that same mix of flavours and textures at home! UK BLOG AWARD !!!

Last Friday evening, an absolutely awesome thing happened! You might remember that Fitness On Toast was short-listed for ‘Best Lifestyle Blog’ in the 2015 UK Blog Awards, and over the past three months, we’ve eagerly awaited the result. The venue for the ‘bloggers soiree’ (themed in the wacky style of ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass‘) was at London’s prestigious Montcalm Hotel; as with the Cosmo event last October, this was an awards ceremony that offered attendees the chance to network with hundreds of other bloggers, both individuals and company-representatives. This year there were over 40,000 entries, and a similar number of votes, with some seriously distinguished bloggers in attendance!

I’m over the moon to report that the representatives from Debenhams (sponsors of the Lifestyle category) announced Fitness On Toast as the ‘Best Lifestyle Blog’ at the awards. I was utterly bowled over, and danced my way up to the stage! GUSH ALERT: I don’t take any of this for granted! This award is the [naturally-sweetened] icing on the [gluten-free, quinoa-flour] cake, and tops off the most amazing twelve months of my blogging life; I want to thank every single one of my readers who took the time to cast a vote for FOT – it fills me with joy, and makes me want to work double-hard on new projects to keep bringing you my best fitness-related content! Thank you again with all my heart 🙂

THE FUTURE OF FITNESS ???

A couple of weeks back, I was joined by friends from Technogym, LuluLuemon, Misfit and my partner in nutritious crime Dr. Michelle Storfer – along with a group of fabulous attendees – to discuss ‘The Future of Fitness’ at the Hoxton Hotel Holborn for an event hosted by Cointreau (phew, long sentence)! The reason I wanted to bring these panellists together is because I think there’s been a totally seismic shift in the health and fitness industry over the last few years, especially in terms of how we consume it through social media. People are partaking of daily fitspo like never before, and the health-conscious are joining a growing on-line community where people display nutritious recipes, opine on fitness fashion ‘looks’ and share workouts. There’s a markedly increased thirst for fitness knowledge too – people want to educate themselves on what to eat, how to train but also why they’re doing it in the first place, and how it all fits together.
